An introduction to Roda

Skirting the northern coastline, the pretty resort of Roda is fast becoming one of Corfu's most popular holiday playgrounds – and it's easy to see why. For starters, its Blue Flag beach is among the best on the island. A mile-long stretch of dark sand is flanked by rugged hills and pine trees. Turquoise waters provide a platform for watersports like paragliding and jet skiing. And there are breathtaking views of the Albanian mountains in the distance. Away from the beach, this place has plenty to offer. Over the last few years, Roda itself has morphed from a small fishing village into a lively hub of activity and, these days, the main road leading to the beach is packed with shops, restaurants and bars. But despite its growth, the town remains defiantly Greek in flavour. A lot of the old buildings are still standing and, if you head down the side-streets, you'll find cobbled alley-ways and family-run bistros serving up seafood. When it comes to getting out and about, you're in a good spot. Saddle up at the horse-trekking centre just outside the town and hack through the hills. And if you want to venture even further afield, Corfu Town is less than an hour away. Packed to the brim with culture, history and shops, it's definitely worthy of a day trip. Regular buses run from Roda to the capital, so getting there and back is a cinch.
